To safely use your phone without triggering a Distraction Event, you must either:
- Be stopped for at least three (3) minutes, or
- Manually end your trip while your vehicle is completely stopped (speed = 0 mph)
Automatically Ending a Trip
A trip in the Mentor App will end automatically when:
- You’ve been stopped for three (3) minutes, or
- The app detects a change in movement mode (e.g., switching to walking)
Once the trip ends, you can safely use your phone without affecting your safety score.
Manually Ending a Trip (Recommended)
If you want to use your phone immediately after parking:
- Ensure your vehicle is stopped (0 mph).
- Open the Mentor App.
- You’ll see the prompt: “Tap OK to immediately end trip recording and safely interact with your phone.”
- Tap OK — the trip ends, and you can use your phone.
Important Notes:
- The prompt only appears if:
- Your vehicle is not moving (0 mph), and
- You open the Mentor App
- Any phone handling during this process will not be recorded as a distraction if you're fully stopped.
What if I get a call or notification while driving?
- Notifications, calls, texts, or emails will not count as distractions if you don’t interact with them.
- Only responding (e.g., answering, swiping, or tapping) will trigger a Distraction Event.
Note: Incoming calls, emails, or texts / notifications while driving will not count as a phone manipulation if you do not respond to them or swipe away notifications. Interacting with voice assistants (such as Siri and Google) can trigger a Distraction event. Live voicemail (iOS) will only count as a Distraction event if the feature is turned on and active.
