Telematics refers to using data gathered either through a car’s internal sensors, the sensors of a device that plugs into a car, or the sensors built into a smartphone. In the case of MentorSM, the data it collects and analyzes comes from the various sensors available in the smartphone. From these sensors, Mentor collects information including the following:
- Harsh Acceleration, Braking & Cornering – major indicators of following too closely, aggressive driving, fatigue and distraction
- Smooth Acceleration, Braking & Cornering – positive behaviors that make your score better, collectively referred to in the app as “Smooth Maneuvers”
- Distraction from Cellphone Usage – a major and growing cause of the increasing rate of vehicle collisions and fatalities
- Threshold Speed & Speed vs Posted Speed Limit – a major indicator of risky driving and increased threat of serious injury
- Total Driving Time – a major indicator of fatigue
