There are two types of Distractions scored in Mentor:
- Phone Manipulation:This is determined by sensors within your handset. These sensors are used to detect certain phone usage such as movement, text messaging, calls, email, swipe-closing a notification, or application use.
For example, if a user picks up, puts down or moves their phone while they are driving, the sensors will capture this activity and will register this behaviour as a Distraction event*. Continuing to do this will result in subsequent Phone Manipulation events being recorded.
- Phone Call:An outgoing phone call will count as a Distraction event. An incoming call will count as a Distraction event if the call is answered. Both hands-free and hand-held calls that are placed or received while driving will count as Distraction events.
Note: Incoming calls, emails or texts/notifications while driving will not count as a phone manipulation if you do not respond to them or swipe away notifications.
*Continued optimisation is done regularly to ensure scenarios like normal phone vibrations or most horizontal slides are not recorded. As mobile handsets/applications evolve, the capture and assessment of sensor data will continue to improve.
